Fundraising campaign in Movember 2015
Mustaches of the world, unite! Movember is here – for over ten years, men around the world have been growing mustaches to self-deprecatingly draw attention to male-related illnesses.
However, the issue is not being taken lightly. On the contrary: For one month, the classic Oliba becomes a first-class communication tool, providing information wherever it is desired.
Party, beer & mustache
The idea originated in Melbourne when Travis Garone and Luke Slattery met for a beer. Even back then, the porn mustache was an uncool relic of the past and tolerated at best on grandfathers.
While every fashion trend eventually experiences a renaissance, the mustache simply refused to make a comeback. It was considered too hideous. Precisely for that reason, however, it was perfectly suited to serve as a symbol.
What started as a dare for a themed party quickly took on a serious character. Travis and Luke simply thought it was the right idea to use the mustache for a more important cause than parties.
Since both had lost several school friends over the years due to mental health problems, Movember took on its purpose: From then on, they wanted to draw attention to maintaining health and raise awareness in order to reduce male-related illnesses.
It started in 2003 with 30 so-called "Mo Bros," and by 2014, over 5 million men worldwide were involved. The Movember Foundation now not only enjoys the status of an official fundraising organization, but also ranks among the 100 largest NGOs in terms of impact, innovation, and sustainability.
A good reason for hair above the mouth
A thick nose-stopper like Magnum's attracts attention wherever it goes. That's why it's perfect for starting conversations with other men. And you should definitely do that during Movember, because it's part of your mission!
Many diseases that affect only men are preventable. Or at least easier to treat in their early stages. Regular check-ups would help in this regard.
While women are invited for breast cancer screenings, for example, check-ups for men are more of a voluntary service. Therefore, very few men actually take advantage of a free health check.
Therefore, Movember explicitly points to some specific diseases that could be avoided through regular checkups. These include:
- Prostate cancer
- Testicular cancer
- poor mental health
- Lack of exercise
But men are notoriously reluctant to go to the doctor and find it incredibly difficult to visit a practice. Better education – from man to man – can prevent diseases from going untreated and, in the best-case scenario, save lives. That's the goal of the Movember Foundation.
And so, these two Australians inspired men around the globe to adopt the idea and turn November into "Moustache November," or Movember. And here we are in 2015, looking forward to this year's most intense Movember ever.
